El Choto

No Comments Eats/Drinks

When travelling one must be extra careful to not pick up anything infectious and bring it home with you.

However Georgina Rogers did just that and boy are we glad she did! She caught Spanish fever and what she bought home that is becoming so infectious is authenticity.

There are quite a few tapas bars and restaurants with a Spanish flavour springing up around Adelaide, but none have El Choto’s passion for undiluted, authentic ingredients.

It is a true introduction to Spanish food, from the ready made sandwiches, that are a feast unto themselves, to the fridge stuffed with wholefoods, to the abundant shelves of imported and quality goods there is no compromise on standard. Not only is this a feat for a small business owner to undertake and maintain, but El Choto has grown in exponentially in popularity since she opened about two years ago. So fast, in fact, I almost don’t want to write this review for fear of my favourite hang out being full next time I come for my fix of tangy, piquant and totally moreish Spanish goodness.

When it comes to the holy bean I will swear that it is the best in Adelaide and I like my coffee. Brewed by De Groots and mixed with Fleurieau Jersey milk, not only is it the creamiest but it is the zingiest. Caffeine is a drug, you get your buzz. Keeping in mind that the bean can be ruined or elevated by the barista, Georgie has an uncanny knack for forming a team with real coffee-chi. Total bean respecters. She has hired staff that reflect the décor; fresh, vibrant, genuine and hard to walk away from!

My advice for first timers is, go on a weekday and get a tortilla roll, a tasting plate, a coffee, then a hot chocolate and a homemade cookie. For Spanish or South American peeps looking for a taste of home I leave you with this image of a Portuguese couple that came in for lunch. So comforted by the taste of the sandwiches that they locked feet under the table, ate in complete silence and actually had tears in their eyes.

Good food is evocative.

Well-made coffee is a welcome indulgence.

Eat at El Choto and find out how Spanish people feel everyday.
